Bushnell Legend 8×42 Waterproof Binocular

The Legend 8×42 Waterproof Binocular is about 10% cheaper  than the Legend Ultra HD 8×42 (listing prices), but due to a huge discount of 49% at Amazon (Feb. 2011) the difference is 42% (the Ultra HD also sells at a huge discount – 35%).
At this discount it becomes very hard indeed not to buy this binocular!

PLEASE NOTE: The Legend 8×42 Waterproof will also be compared to the Bushnell 244208  8 x 42 Excursion EX Binocular, where the Excursion EX is reviewed.

Optics: The  Legend 8×42 Waterproof Binocular is acclaimed for its excellent optics rendering crisp-clear, color- true images, brought about by the PC-3 phase-coated BaK-4 roof prisms with SHR (Super High Reflection Coating), as well as fully multi-coated optics for maximum light transmission and optimum brightness.
Its weatherproofing is as good as it gets: On top of the expected water- and fogproofing, the outer lenses are also  treated with Bushnell’s water repelling Rainguard.
“As a professional seabird guide, I take my binoculars to sea 8-10 times per year under often adverse conditions. Rain, wave spash, salt spray, chum–my optics are smeared during a trip. …………….. Thus, I was looking for binoculars in the $250-300 street price range. … I wanted very good optical qualities, ruggedness, waterproof, nitrogen purged, standard-sized roofs. I wanted them to be quite good binoculars even on land.
……..  I chose the Bushnell Legend for the Rainguard feature, which is supposed to shed water off the lenses with just a shake–a great feature at sea, and it seems to work great!” (Greg Gillson, The Bird Guide, Inc., thebirdguide.com)
Eye relief: Its eye relief of 18 mm. is more than sufficient for wearers of eyeglasses.
Close focus ability: Its close focus distance of 1.8 m./5.9 ft. is the best I could find in this price range. Excellent for people interested in small creatures like butterflies.
On the negative side the following features stand out:
Weight: At 853 gm./30.09 oz. this binocular is way heavier than its competition and the heaviest of all the Bushnells featuring in the category “8×42 Binoculars” on this website.
FOV: Its field of view of 330.75 ft @ 1000 yards (6.3 degrees angular) is below par in its price range.

In the end the huge discount and the many positive features will have to be weighed against the few negative features.

Please note:
At 8×42-binoculars-150  the Legend 8×42 Waterproof Binocular is compared to other binoculars in the same price range.
